Hunter College Continuing Education of the City University of New York (CUNY), in partnership with the renowned International English Language Institute (IELI), has been offering high-quality, affordable English as a Second Language (ESL) courses and English language teaching and learning certificates in the heart of New York City since 1950. The IELI at Hunter College serves thousands of students from over 70 countries yearly in beginner- to bridge-to-college-level English courses.

Hunter’s Continuing Education IELI programs offer a supportive, personalized learning environment with expert, experienced faculty and the vibrancy and inspiration of Manhattan’s iconic Upper East Side – featuring numerous NYC landmarks and cultural destinations within walking distance of Hunter’s main campus on East 68th. Whether a day trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art or attending exciting lecture series, plays, talks, concerts, dances, and many other shows at the Park Avenue Armory, the Hunter College campus and the surrounding neighborhood is ideal for immersing yourself in English language learning.

Our ESL and English language programs aim to prepare New York City residents, visitors on tourist visas, diplomats, and international students for entry into American colleges, universities, institutions, or businesses. These programs accelerate networking and career opportunities, enrich interpersonal experiences, and empower English language learners by developing accuracy, fluency, and self-confidence. We are authorized to issue I-20 forms, and after completing the program, students may apply for undergraduate or graduate-level programs at Hunter College with the TOEFL requirement waived.

Learn more about our certificates in Intensive Academic Skills instruction, Test Preparation, and Special Programs. Explore our English for Family and Friends option, which provides a private English-language tutor to customize the experience to your or your group’s specific needs.
